The 2004 Hilltown Woods Fall Fling was held 16 October and was again hosted by the O'Malley's
and the Mixson's. Action began around 5:30 AM on the 16th and ran 'til almost midnight. Our
normal "die hard" group who generally stick around 'til the wee morning hours couldn't make
it this year. Must be getting old!
This year we had 28 families in attendance, 23 being from our neighborhood. If you wish the details, the sign up sheets show 50 adults, 29 kids under 8 and 24 kids over 8 attended. Mother Nature did her best to foul up the event with a chilly and windy day and some showers about eating time. Didn't work. We put up our canopies and kept on trucking. Porky 2004 (weighing in at 95 pounds) was on the roaster at 06:25; the brunswick stew started at about the same time. We learned our lesson last year and didn't use the "quick light" charcoal which messed us up in 2003. However, heaven forbid, we still probed Porky's hams with an electronic meat thermometer! True Pig Pickin' officianadas are likely rolling their eyes and speaking in disgust of these "tin horns" trying to roast a pig. Porky turned out really well this year, I think. By mid-morning, the Brunswick stew was beginning to taste rather scrumptious. People started arriving around mid-afternoon. A favorite early past time is sampling the Brunswick stew. At 4 PM, the kid's entertainment arrived...The Purple Dinosaur jump and the Trackless Train. They were both big hits. Thank goodness the rain came around 6 as they were packing up. We then had the hush puppies, hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken ready and Porky 2004 was chopped and we began to eat in earnest. Evening festivities consisted of hayrides, movies and, of course, the traditional bonfire. Glow necklaces were again available for the kids; those are always a tremendous hit. (Thanks to Greg Guinette for coming by Sunday morning and checking for discards. They're almost impossible to see in daylight and make a heck of a mess when the lawn mower hits them!!) All in all, it was a wonderful event. For those who were not able to attend, plan for next year. My guess is the date will be October 15th, but, that is really TBD. I'm working on editing the pictures from this year's event. I'll let you know as soon as they're posted. jim |
