Hilltown Woods Fall Fling 2001

              Basic Recipes

The 3rd annual Hilltown Woods Fall Fling for 2001 was held as scheduled on Saturday the 20th of October. Again this year, the event was combined with the annual block party. So, we celebrated with our 6th annual block party as well.

The event, by all accounts, was a resounding success; perhaps the best one yet.

We had 105 people scheduled to attend, representing 24 local households plus 6 more units not from our area. The weather was absolutely gorgeous moving from partly cloudy in the early morning to clear in the later afternoon, evening and night. Very light to no wind; the temperature was at 65 degrees by 2 PM.

Activities started at 5:45 AM (yeh, I missed my 5:30 target sorry)! The last people went home about 1:40 AM the 21st. We cleaned up and doused the bon fire after that!!

The Brunswick stew was started about 6 AM, and Porky the Pig was cooking by 8:15 AM. Again, I assured that Porky s snout pointed toward North Carolina hoping that would assure an excellent cooking. (Seemed to work pretty good, too!) Samples of the still cooking stew started disappearing at 10 AM and continued through the day! It made an enjoyable lunch for quite a few people.

The petting zoo/pony rides arrived at 3:30 PM, as scheduled. The little ones were VERY excited. Other events for the young ones included a movie projected onto the side of the O Malley house, many, many hayride trips and light sticks in the later evening. Once the bon fire got going, there were quite a few marshmallow roasters and S More makers, too. I m still stepping in dropped marshmallows!

If you re interested in the recipes for the cole slaw, Brunswick stew and BBQ sauces, the basics are on my web site. Start at http://www.mixson.org/. I say basics, cause none of my dishes are ever quite the same. Each is tweaked on the fly!

I m already looking forward to next year, and, I hope you are too. I suspect we ll hold the event somewhere from the middle to the end of October, as usual. Plan to be there!
