Rev. Dr. Paul Smith Mixon Sr. Obituary
Chaplain Mixon, lieutenant colonel, U.S. Air Force, a native of Osyka, Miss., and resident of Shalimar, Fla., since 1987, went to be with the Lord as his family surrounded him with love, on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. He was honorably retired from full-time ministry and a member of the Florida Presbytery. He faithfully served the Lord as a Presbyterian minister for almost 50 years serving as pastor of churches in Alto, La., West Memphis, Ark., Mobile, Ala., Milton, Fla., Natchez, Miss., and Shalimar, and as an Air Force chaplain for 30 years traveling and serving throughout the world, and as a hospice chaplain for five years. Paul earned a B.A. from LSU, M.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary, a Doctorate of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary, completed a Clinical Pastoral Education residency at Baptist Hospital of New Orleans, La., and wrote the book From Chatham to Osyka about the Mixon family's journey from England to Mississippi which also features some of his articles printed in the Defender Newsletter. He was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association, and since retirement he served 13 years as chaplain for our local branch. He influenced many lives for Christ. He was also a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was the son of the late Winfred and Mildred Mixon of Osyka. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, G. Minora Mixon; his children and their spouses, Tammy Wright and Steve, Paulette Mixon-Weller and Ryan, Suzanna Mixon, Paul Mixon, Jr. and Kirsten; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Chloe, Michael, Preston, Brooke, Madilyn, Stephen, and Emily. He was preceded in death by siblings, Eulalie "E" Beard and Max, Evelyn "Sis" Slocum and Jessee, Joseph Mixon and Christine, Ben Mixon and Aline; and is survived by sisters, Madge Young and Richard, Valerie Easley and John; and brother, Don Mixon and Sybil; and much loved cousins, nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at Shalimar Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m., and a reception to follow. Burial at a later date in Osyka.
