Obituary-Carrie Sheldonia (Gray) Smoak (1877)

-Rites Sunday for Mrs. Smoak
Mrs. Carrie  Gray Smoak, 76 widow of the late Furman E. Smoak, 
died at 8:30 a.m. Friday at  Orangeburg Regional Hospital.  
She had been in failing health for several years.  Mrs. Smoak 
lived at Flemington, Fla.  for a good many years until last August, 
when she moved to make her  home with a brother, J.B. Gray, in the 
Fogle Community near Orangeburg.  She was born near Cope a daughter 
of the late Morgan D. and Sallie Smoak Gray and was a member of the 
Edisto Baptist Church.  
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Edisto Baptist Church 
with the Rev. Mark Osborne officiating.  Burial in the Church cemetery.  
The remains will be at the residence of J. B. Gray until the hour of 
service.  Mrs. Smoak is survived by these stepchildren, Harry Smoak 
and Mrs. Onnie Mixson, both of Flemington, Fla. and Clifton Smoak of 
Greenville, S.C. four sisters, Mrs. Robert Tiner of Orangeburg, Mrs. 
Marie Segrest of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Theo. Syphrett of Walterboro 
and Mrs. Lucia Bolen of Charleston and four brothers M.D. and J. B. 
Gray both of Orangeburg, R.R. Gray of Jacksonville, Fla. and Jessie 
J. Gray of Florence, and a number of nieces and nephews.  Active 
pollbearers at the funeral was George Gray, William Gray, Wilbar 
Gray, Robert  Tiner, Jr. , Ashton Sypherett and Jessie Gray, Jr.   
Honarory pallbearers was the Deacons of the Edisto Baptist Church 
and  also Tom Williams, C.R. Stroch, Ralph Kirkland, Keyward Dantzler, 
William Stone, Womaw Smoak, Lawton Ashe, Joe Hewitt and Croum Nettles.
