To the west of Flemington along highway 318 there is a long hill, downward to the east. All my life I've heard it referred to as "Spook Hill". Supposedly one could sit at the top looking east and see ghostly lights. I spent more than one night there but never saw any lights. Danny Tillman tells the story of running away from home and finding himself at a motel in Williston. He decided to come back and came east on 318 from Williston. The ghost lights met him as he approached Flemington. His telling of his story sparked much discussion as to whether the lights might have been from the store at the Flemington crossroads. Some are adamant there was no need for an outside light, but, I'm pretty sure there was one there. My writings say: "... Perhaps my imagination is running rampant, but, now that I've thought about it a bit, I believe the Flemington store had a light out front. This is during the day when they sold gasoline (Gulf?). The light was one of those mushroom shaped things suspended from a goose neck arm attached to the front of the store. It extended out 3-4 feet or so, I believe. The light used a single incandescent bulb. ..." I later wrote: "... I feel I'm doing the proverbial "flogging a dead mule", but.... First, the store at Flemington is in the NW quadrant of the 318/329 crossroads. 318 runs E/W, 329 runs N/S. The store front faces 318 to the south. Any light on the front would be toward 318. Secondly, we went by there yesterday, the 27th of June. What I remember as the light on the front has been replaced with a more modern version. Not very modern, but, not the bulb I remember. Lori and I drove by; I did a U-turn to get a better view. Lori asked me what the heck I was doing. (I read her query much more strongly that "heck".. . :-) That as it may be, today's light is fed by an older looking wire above the current mount. This implies to me that there was a prior light there, mounted slightly higher. I take that as evidence my memory is correct...an earlier different light. ..." |
