The old well, story one...Wiggle tails: The Gilbert/Onnie Mixson homestead had a dug well in the front yard. It was surrounded by boards; one got water by lowering a bucket down with a rope and hauling the bucket of water up by hand. Being an stagnant water area, dark and cool, it was an ideal breeding place for mosquitoes. Grandpa Gilbert is said to admonish people "Be sure you blow off the wiggle tails before you drink it!". (Wiggle tails are mosquito larvae.) The old well, story two... Drinking by the old well: It's told by Jimmy (who heard the exchange) that Grandpa Gilbert had gotten his hands on some moonshine at one time. Standing by the old well that was in the front yard, he had imbibed quite a bit. Grandma Onnie approached him and spoke very loudly as he was a bit deaf. She said "Gilbert, I can't stand you when you've been drinking." He didn't hear her, so she repeated more loudly. He heard the second time. His response? "Onnie, I can't stand you unless I have been drinking." Knowing Grandma, I'll bet his life was hell for a good while. |
