I have fond memories of the Gladneys: Aunt Estelle, Harvey and Lucille and kids Gail, Hal and Judy. Daddy and Harvey did a lot of farming together. Often their mutual crops were planted in the Gladney fields. Many is the day brother Wayne and I would get off the school bus at their house with Gail as our family would be over there visiting and working. Lots of evenings our time might be spent covering the truck crop Harvey and Daddy were growing (to keep it from freezing). I remember squash particularly. Other days, we'd watch TV...like the Mickey Mouse Club. The Gladneys had television long before we did. I also remember the Dreher house...somewhat to the NW of the Gladneys. There were Saturday night dances there. Seems to me most of the neighborhood came. Sometimes the menfolk would be out front telling jokes and talking about things that aren't repeatable here!!! Aunt Estelle could really "cut a rug"! I particularly remember one night Gerald Feaster and I decided to "shock" some people. There was and old crank telephone behind the dance floor room. Those old 'phones could (electrically) shock the crap out of you if you got across the wiring while cranking it. So, Gerald and I got a long piece of wire. Gerald ran it up his clothing and let it come out his sleeve. He was to give a tug on the wire when he got the ends of the wire on someone and I was to crank like mad. As it turns out, I cranked like mad while Gerald was still holding the wires. Lots of yelling and screaming to say the least. |
