This story is told by Jimmy Mixson... Back in the 1920's word was sent to James Darlington Mixson that a clean-up day was being held at Wacahoota Baptist Cemetery. He asked his son, Maxey, to take some of the "hands" and go help. The "hands" refused to go. "That cemetery is haunted" they said. Now, roll forward to 4 February 2011. It's the funeral service for Doris Hanson (Mixson) Barker, one of the very few new interments at the cemetery. The church has been gone for years. The cemetery is about a mile off a main road behind locked gates. There are two Mixson cousins standing side by side. Jimmy and Joe Mixson. Joe is on one side of Jimmy, James Smith on the other. Jimmy, son of Maxey, and Joe, son of Archibald James Kirkland Mixson and brother of Doris. The Smith family and the Mixson family tie together some generations ago. The three were chatting before the service started. Joe nudged Jimmy and nodded his head to their right. Standing there was a man in a heavy overcoat wearing a cowboy hat and with a large handlebar mustache curled up on the ends. Jimmy asked Joe who that was. Joe didn't know. Jimmy nudged James to look and asked him who the person was. James didn't know. Shortly the service started and attention was diverted from the unknown individual. As the service ended, Jimmy turned to walk over to the unknown person. He was gone! No one had heard a car start nor had they seen the man leave. Is Wacahoota Baptist Cemetery haunted? You decide. |
